I love the Penguin Pool at London Zoo designed by Lubetkin in 1934 hence why it made it into my book review for ‘Best Buildings in Britain’.
Times have quite rightly changed for penguins in zoos and I enjoyed watching Wellington take his curious walk through the Chicago Aquarium on youtube recently which has racked up nearly a million views. I however remember visiting the Penguin Pool as a child and wondering even then how the impossibly built structure was held together. As an architect today I see this as a delightful, playful building that highlighted the potential of reinforced concrete.
The book is well written and photographed as an eclectic selection of some of Britain’s best buildings since 1918 and it was a pleasure to review for Design Insider Live.
